Storytelling for visual media is a special skill and requires specific insights into how the film and TV industry functions. This class provides an overview of exactly what the screenwriter’s job is.  It covers how and why screenplays look the way they do, what goes in them and what gets left out, and how a script is formatted.

Students will create a short screenplay (5 to 10 pages) over the course of the class and will participate in critiques of screenplays written by other students.

Note: Each student will need access to word processing or specialized screenwriting software, and a printer. There will be a suggested reading list, but the purchase of books is not mandatory.

Michael McLeod has been a working writer for 40+ years. His background includes being senior staff writer for a Fortune 500 company and a story analyst* at one of the big three networks. He is the author of three screenplays, four stage plays, and multiple published short stories. Michael recently moved here from Los Angeles, was invited to join the Virginia Screenwriters' Forum, and is loving Virginia.

*Story analyst: a person who is paid to evaluate incoming scripts and/or make suggestions about how to fix problems in, or enhance, existing or in-production scripts.
